Medellin & Comuna 13

Previously Medellin was dubbed the most dangerous city in the world. Having endured the extreme violence instilled by drug cartels, the city was home to Pablo Escabar and became the cocaine capital of the world. The city also became one of the front lines in the battle between the government and Colombia's Guerrilla movement.

The torn apart city has undergone a massive regeneration and in 2013 was described by the Urban Land Institute as ‘the most innovative city in the world’.

A combination of architecture and infrastructure implemented throughout Medellin and notorious neighbourhood comuna 13, have led to a safer, thriving and happier city.

The key to its success in the transport link:the cable cars, metro and outdoor escalators, connect neighbourhoods together and provide people residents with easy access to the rest of the city.

Architectural interventions can be found throughout the city, including the library, Escenarios Deportivos (Sports Centre) and Orquideorama (Botanical Garden).

Art and graffiti are prolific here, it is used as a form of expression and a reminder of the past.

The recent River parks master-plan aims to unify and further socially integrate the city. The master plan seeks to integrate engineering, urbanism and landscape, creating routes, funcycle  parks, bridges and gardens to name a few.
