A €100M project to develop the North Ireland infrastructure from 2014-2020 which is part-funded by the EU (Investment for growth and jobs) - operational on 3rd September 2018.

BRT - Glider creates a network linking the East & West allowing for better access to jobs, hospitals, schools etc. The proposed network is to be a high quality, reliable service which integrates with the current forms of transport. Glider is currently replacing some Metro lines, however it will also be operating in conjunction to some bus routes. The overall network is posed to improve efficiency and cut journey times by 25%.

The glider vehicles are articulated which use hybrid diesel/electric technology. These are 18M long with a capacity of 105 people, including on board Wi-Fi, USB charging points and audio/visual travel information.

The network has heavily impacted the general infrastructure of Belfast;

  • New and resurfaced bus lanes, replacing on-street parking with controlled short-term parking.

  • LED lighting along the route.

  • New pedestrian walkways.

  • Upgraded bus shelters including cycle parking.

The new network has been a great success, as a result phase 2 which will link the North and South is hopeful.
