The Salmon of knowledge

This image is from the waterfront where the river Farset and the river Lagan meet, the two largest rivers in Belfast It is joined by other installations, one being a previous sculpture, called the Beacon of Hope, of a woman holding a ring in the air with a globe at her feet. The ring was designed to symbolise thanksgiving while the globe was there to represent peace and harmony throughout Northern Ireland.
The Big Fish, which is a salmon, was commissioned in 1999 to celebrate the river Lagan. It is covered in ceramic tiles which each tell a story of the city but all in different ways. Some of the tiles are newspaper articles from major events of the history of Belfast, others are old maps and illustrations showing what it was like throughout their history.
Each tile has been contributed by different people, some of which being school children and also contains a time capsule with images and text inside. This was designed to celebrate the regeneration of part of the city and also to show the history throughout this city in a non-violent and peaceful way, encouraging all members of the community to come together and create something as a whole.
